Are Gutter Guards Worth It?

Gutter guards have a convincing pitch: install them once, stop cleaning gutters forever.

We’ve installed gutters across Wisconsin and Minnesota long enough to give you a straight answer. They can be worth it, but only if you choose the right system for your climate and your home.

Are Gutter Guards Worth It? Quick Answer:

  • Worth it for homes with heavy tree coverage
  • Worth it for two-story homes or safety concerns
  • Less necessary for low-debris properties
  • Reduce maintenance, but don’t eliminate it

Why Gutter Guards Matter in Wisconsin and Minnesota

Wisconsin and Minnesota put gutters through a lot. Spring brings heavy rain and snowmelt runoff. Summer drops leaves, helicopter seeds, and the occasional hailstorm. Then, fall loads your gutters with debris right before freeze-up, and winter turns standing water into ice dams.

That cycle is hard on unprotected gutters. Debris builds up, water backs up behind it, and you’re either up on a ladder every few weeks or dealing with the water damage that comes from ignoring it.

Clogged gutters can push water behind your fascia boards, into your soffits, and eventually into your foundation.

Gutter guards reduce how often that happens. They don’t eliminate maintenance, but for most homes we work on in the region, they meaningfully cut down on the frequency and risk of cleaning.

What the Best Gutter Guard Systems Actually Do

Not all gutter guards are the same, and this is where many homeowners get burned. The inexpensive foam inserts and plastic snap-on covers found at big box stores often trap debris on top, sag over time, and create new problems while solving old ones.

The gutter protection systems worth considering use micro-mesh or surface tension designs that let water flow through while keeping out leaves, pine needles, and roof grit. They’re typically installed professionally, secured to your gutters and roofline rather than just resting in place.

Our team at Bruce Andrews Seamless Gutters carries one of the better leaf protection systems on the market, specifically chosen because it holds up to the freeze-thaw conditions common across our service area.

That matters in places like the Twin Cities, Eau Claire, or anywhere along the St. Croix Valley where temperature swings can be dramatic between seasons.

What Gutter Guards Don’t Do (And What to Expect Instead)

Gutter guards don’t make gutters maintenance-free. Fine particles, roof granules, and small debris can still accumulate over time. You’ll likely need a cleaning every few years rather than every few months, which, for most people, is a worthwhile trade.

They also won’t fix a poorly pitched gutter or one that’s already pulling away from the fascia.

If your gutters have existing problems, those need to be addressed before any guard system goes on. We always do a full inspection before we recommend adding leaf protection to an existing system.

That’s the kind of experience our customers appreciate. One recent client put it simply: we did what we said we would do, for the agreed price, with good communication and timely completion. That’s the baseline, and it’s what we hold ourselves to on every job.

How to Know If Gutter Guards Are Worth It for Your Home

A few factors push the answer toward yes. If you have large trees over or near your roofline, particularly maples, oaks, or pines, common throughout Minnesota and Wisconsin, you’re probably cleaning gutters two to four times a year.

Guards pay for themselves faster in those situations.

Two-story homes are another strong case. Getting up on a ladder to clean second-floor gutters carries real risk. Reducing that frequency with a quality guard system is a reasonable safety decision, not just a convenience one.

Get a Gutter Guard System That Works in Midwest Conditions

If your home has minimal tree coverage and you clean your gutters once a year without issue, the math may not justify gutter guards. We’ll tell you that upfront.

But for homes dealing with frequent debris and clogs, the right system can reduce maintenance and help protect your home year-round.

Schedule a consultation with Bruce Andrews Seamless Gutters to get a recommendation based on your home and conditions. If it makes sense, we’ll show you the right option. If it doesn’t, you’ll know before you commit.

Gutter Guard FAQs

Will gutter guards prevent ice dams?

No. Ice dams form when heat escapes through the roof and melts snow that then refreezes at the eaves. Gutter guards don’t address that. Proper attic insulation and ventilation are the fix for ice dams.

Do gutter guards void my gutter warranty?

It depends on the product and installer. We only install guard systems compatible with our seamless gutters, so warranty coverage isn’t an issue on the work we do from start to finish.

How long do quality gutter guards last?

A professionally installed micro-mesh or surface-tension system typically lasts 20 years or more with minimal maintenance. Cheap insert-style guards rarely make it past five.

Can I add guards to my existing gutters?

In most cases, yes. We inspect the existing gutters first to make sure they’re in good shape. Guards on damaged or improperly pitched gutters won’t perform well.
